DVD previews: 'Black Mass,' 'Trumbo'

Here's a look at DVDs coming out Tuesday, Feb. 16:

“Black Mass” (R, 122 minutes, Warner): Johnny Depp slathers on makeup to become real-life Boston crime lord James “Whitey” Bulger in this dramatization of the mobster's 1970s collaboration with an FBI agent. Contains brutal violence, crude language throughout, some sexual references and brief drug use. Extras include “Johnny Depp: Becoming Whitey Bulger” featurette. Blu-ray adds “The Manhunt for Whitey Bulger,” “Black Mass: Deepest Cover, Darkest Crime.”

“Trumbo” (R, 124 minutes, Universal): Bryan Cranston, nominated for a best actor Oscar for his role, portrays blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in this biopic. Contains obscenity, sexual references, brief nudity and copious smoking. Extras include “Who is Trumbo?” and “Bryan Cranston Becomes Trumbo.”

“Steve Jobs” (R, 122 minutes, Universal): Michael Fassbender stars in an offbeat portrait of the iconoclastic Apple co-founder. Contains obscenity. Extras include “Inside Jobs: The Making of Steve Jobs,” commentary with director Danny Boyle, and commentary with writer Aaron Sorkin and editor Elliot Graham.

“The 33” (PG-13, 127 minutes, Warner): Antonio Banderas and Lou Diamond Phillips are among the actors who play 33 miners trapped 2,300 feet underground for 69 days in this account of the internationally famous 2010 Chilean mining accident. Contains a disaster scene, obscenity and alcohol abuse. Extras include “The 33 The World Was Watching” and the theatrical trailer. Blu-ray adds “The Mine Collapse.”

Also: “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” (documentary marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party), “Criminal Activities” (four friends get in over their heads with a ruthless crime boss), “Death By Hanging” (restored 1968 dark satire by Japanese director Nagisa Oshima), “Estranged” (modern Gothic horror tale), “Hatched” (animated adventures of three young chickens), “The Iron Ministry” (documentary about China's railways), “The Kid” (restoration of Charlie Chaplin's 1921 silent classic), “Labyrinth of Lies” (German post-World War II drama), “The Mutilator” (restored 1985 slasher film).

Television series: “Girls: The Complete Fourth Season” (two-disc set with all 10 episodes), “Togetherness: The Complete First Season” (two-disc set with all eight-episodes), “The Trials of Jimmy Rose” (BBC drama starring Ray Winstone).
