Brazil and University of Texas reach deal on Zika vaccine

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - Brazilian Health Minister Marcelo Castro says the South American country is signing an agreement with the University of Texas to develop a vaccine against the Zika virus.

Castro says the goal is to develop a vaccine ready for clinical testing within 12 months.

The agreement between the University of Texas and Brazil's Evandro Chagas Institute calls for the Brazilian government to invest $1.9 million in research.

Castro said at a news conference Thursday that that the Health Ministry also has reached vaccine partnerships with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is looking to work with pharmaceutical giant GSK.
