The Buddy Foundation celebrates its 21st birthday

Happy birthday to you.

Happy birthday to you.

Happy birthday dear, Buddy.

Happy birthday to you.

We're 21 years old.

Join The Buddy Foundation Thursday, Feb. 25, at DRINK, 871 E. Algonquin Road, in Schaumburg, as we celebrate America at our 21st birthday party by honoring veterans and servicemen. Those on active duty will get free admission.

We can trace all of the customs of our birthday celebrations. According to scholars, the Bible's reference to a Pharoah's birthday, around 3,000 B.C. was the earliest known mention of a birthday celebration.

Birthday cakes can be traced to the Ancient Greeks, who made round or moon shaped honey cakes as offerings to Artemis, the Lunar Goddess.

Some scholars believe people placed lit candles on the cake so the smoke would carry their prayers and wishes to the gods who lived in the skies. Others believe the custom of lighting birthday candles originated in Germany, where people placed a large, lit candle in the center of the cake to symbolize "the light of life."

In the 18th century, "Kinderfest" was a German celebration held for German children, "kinder," and involved birthday cakes, making a wish and blowing out the candles atop the cake. The history of giving birthday presents can be traced to the giving of "Good Wishes."

In 1893, Patty and Mildred J. Hill wrote a song titled "Good Morning to All." Some of the lyrics were rewritten and, in 1924, Robert Coleman published "Happy Birthday to You."

Join us for Buddy's 21st Birthday Celebration Party at DRINK. For $30 in advance; $35 at the door, there will be a buffet, birthday cake, two drink tickets, a raffle, auction and music and entertainment.

Remember, these events are the only ways to raise money for the shelter. We receive no state or local subsidies of any kind. All donations go directly to assist the animals at The Buddy Foundation. There are no salaries and no paid staff - everyone is a volunteer.

Happy 21st birthday, Buddy!
