Fort Wayne zoo seeks volunteer toad, frog trackers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is looking for volunteers as part of an effort to track frog and toad species.

The Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/1PkIDTS ) reports the zoo is again participating in a nationwide frog and toad-counting conservation endeavor with FrogWatch USA. Under the project, families can contribute data that can be used by scientists to determine threats to populations of amphibians.

Zoo volunteer manager Kathy Terlizzi says volunteers will be taught to recognize calls of the 11 toad and frog species in the region and how to record findings in an online database. Volunteers then go out to a local pond, stream, wetlands or marsh to listen for the toads and frogs.

Participants are asked to listen at sites twice a week during breeding season.
