Rolling Meadows wins third-place crossover against Barrington

Rolling Meadows completed its girls basketball regular season on Tuesday night by taking a 67-55 triumph in the Mid-Suburban League third-place crossover contest at Barrington.

"Our kids came out ready to play," said Rolling Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "I thought we had good balance on the offensive end.

"Hannah Mickey (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Megan King (12 points, four 3-pointers) were solid on both ends of the floor."

Mustangs junior Kyra Spiwak scored a game-high 20 points and handed out 5 assists while classmate Morgan Campagna had 12 points and 5 rebounds.

Katherine Nolan pulled down 8 rebounds for Meadows (18-9).

Senior Kelly Katis scored 17 points to lead Barrington while classmate Megan Talbot had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Senior Abigail Elo added 9 points for the Fillies and classmate Auri Grayson had 7.

Meadows raced out to a 24-7 lead after one quarter.

"We just came out flat in the first quarter and that hurt us the rest of the game," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "We outscored them in the final three quarters but it's difficult to give up a 17-point lead out of the gate against good team like Meadows.

"Megan (Talbot) cleaned up on the boards, and Auri (Grayson) did a nice job rebounding as well."

The Fillies will take a 13-13 record into postseason play.

"We have some big games coming up to prepare for," Barreiro said "Hopefully this game will be a lesson for us."

Prospect 65, Hoffman Estates 53: Senior Angela Roman led a balanced attack for visiting Prospect (9-18) with 15 points as the Knights avenged an earlier-season overtime loss to Hoffman.

Teammates Margherite Pettenuzzo, Angelina Villasin and Clare O'Carroll (9 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steals) each added 11 points followed by Nikki Matters (9) and Brenda Kendziera (8).

"We were not going to allow that (overtime loss) to happen again," said Prospect coach Gabrielle Lovin. "We had an incredible point spread with four players in double digits and two other players a couple points away."

The Knights had 16 assists in the game.

"That's been a number we have struggled to get closed to as of late," Lovin said. "We took an opportunity to play as a team and let one another shine when it was their chance to.

"Hoffman did a great job driving and slashing toward the basket. Holding them to 8 points in the fourth quarter was a huge stop for us."

Hoffman Estates (10-17) was led by Monraia Wilson's game-high 21 points while teammates Erin Hanson and Tayler Williams added 9 apiece.

Palatine 55 Elk Grove 43: Senior Ashley Shapiro scored a game-high 17 points followed by teammates Elena Porrata (11) and Reggie Much (6) as host Palatine improved to 10-17 in the MSL crossover against the Grenadiers (3-22).

Pirates senior Allison Rzepka, sidelined for months, returned to the floor and scored a basket.

Wheeling 37, Conant 27: Junior Melissa Claver scored 14 points while sophomore Nansy Velev and junior Coco Yoshino each chipped in 7 for visiting Wheeling (13-15) in the MSL crossover.

Junior Jorie Wachal led the Cougars (9-18) with 17 points.
