Lovelace to get new lawyer for retrial in wife's death

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - The former Quincy prosecutor facing a second murder trial in his wife's 2006 Valentine's Day death will have a new legal team.

Springfield defense attorney James Elmore tells The Herald-Whig in Quincy (bit.ly/1Qnrff0 ) that neither he nor co-counsel Jeff Page will represent Curtis Lovelace during a retrial scheduled to begin May 31.

An Adams County judge declared a mistrial last week after jurors deadlocked in Lovelace's first-degree murder trial. The former assistant county state's attorney, University of Illinois football captain and Quincy school board president is accused of suffocating first wife Cory Lovelace in her sleep.

Elmore says the jury of 10 women and two men were split evenly on the question of Lovelace's guilt. Court officials have not released the jury vote count.
