Leicester beats City 3-1, Torres nets 100th Atletico goal

Leicester firmly underlined its Premier League title credentials with a 3-1 win at Manchester City on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid moved provisionally level on points with Barcelona at the top of the Spanish league by beating Eibar 3-1.

Fernando Torres finally scored his 100th goal for Atletico.

Bayern Munich missed the chance to go 10 points clear in the Bundesliga after being held to a scoreless draw at Bayer Leverkusen.

The top three in the Bundesliga all drew, as second-place Borussia Dortmund's match at Hertha Berlin also ended 0-0, with Jose Mourinho watching from the stands.

ENGLAND

From 5,000/1 outsiders for the title in August, Leicester became the 7/4 favorite with several British bookmakers on Saturday after going five points clear at the top.

"I don't believe in the bookmakers," Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri said. "The bookmakers at the beginning said Ranieri would be the first to be sacked. Then?"

City's home loss to Leicester was compounded by Tottenham edging Watford 1-0 and replacing Manuel Pellegrini's team in second place.

Both games saw defenders scoring rare goals, with Kieran Trippier netting for the first time for Tottenham, and Robert Huth claiming a double for Leicester - including a third-minute opener.

Riyad Mahrez netted Leicester's second, with Sergio Aguero getting a late consolation for City.

Elsewhere, relegation-threatened Sunderland scored twice in the final eight minutes as it fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Liverpool.

Aston Villa won for only the third time this season but remained at the bottom despite beating Norwich 2-0. Sunderland is four points ahead of Villa next-from-bottom.

Norwich replaced Newcastle in the relegation zone, with the north-east side beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0.

SPAIN

In Madrid, Torres found the net from close range after a low cross by Luciano Vietto in second-half injury time, scoring his first goal since September. Fans at the Vicente Calderon Stadium gave the striker a standing ovation and loudly chanted his name after the final whistle.

"Finally," Torres said. "After many games and many years, this is something that will stay with me forever. I know I'll be among the club's greatest goal scorers. It's a prize for me."

Defender Jose Gimenez and midfielder Saul Niguez also scored second-half goals for Atletico after Niguez's blunder just after halftime led to Sergio Keko's goal for Eibar.

The victory halted Atletico's four-game winless streak. Barcelona has two games in hand.

Villarreal, which couldn't manage more than a 0-0 draw with Athletic in Bilbao, remained fourth.

GERMANY

Bayern Munich dropped points for only the third time in 20 games this season. Also, Xabi Alonso was sent off late for two tactical fouls within minutes of each other.

Pep Guardiola's side still has an eight-point advantage over Dortmund, with Hertha 10 points further back.

Schalke defeated Wolfsburg 3-0 to move to fourth, two points behind Hertha, thanks to goals from Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Johannes Geis and Alessandro Schoepf.

Elsewhere, Stuttgart won at Eintracht Frankfurt 4-2 to move five points clear of the relegation zone, Ingolstadt came from behind to defeat Augsburg 2-1, and Mainz won at bottom side Hannover 1-0.

Stuttgart and Frankfurt finished with 10 men.

ITALY

Fiorentina failed to keep up the pressure on the top two in Serie A as it was held at Bologna to 1-1 after midfielder Mati Fernandez was sent off early in the second half on Saturday.

Fiorentina remained third, seven points behind Napoli and five behind Juventus. Both face teams in the relegation zone on Sunday, with Napoli hosting Carpi, and Juventus visiting Frosinone.

Inter Milan can leapfrog Fiorentina with a win at Hellas Verona, also on Sunday. Then they meet in the next round.

Elsewhere, Lazio captain Stefano Mauri headed a corner onto a crossbar as his side drew an entertaining match 0-0 at relegation-threatened Genoa.

FRANCE

Ten-man Monaco overcame a sending off early in the second half to beat local rival Nice 1-0 and remain in second place in the French league on Saturday.

Nice would have overtaken Monaco on goal difference if it had won the French Riviera derby, but failed to take advantage after Monaco midfielder Nabil Dirar was sent off in the 47th minute after two yellow cards in quick succession.

Instead, the red card inspired Monaco, and midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko headed in a free kick from Joao Moutinho in the 81st to seal a hard-fought win.

Monaco remains a massive 21 points behind runaway leader Paris Saint-Germain, which plays at bitter rival Marseille on Sunday.

Lyon won at Angers 3-0 to move up to fifth place, one point behind Angers.
