Guns at grocery could be lifesavers

In the Jan. 22 Daily Herald article "You don't need a gun to buy groceries," the reader should take note that 20 protesters isn't exactly a groundswell of outcry for Sunset Foods to ban guns from their local store.

I don't think the silent majority agrees with these protesters on this issue. Protester Sally Nador commented as follows: "I don't want to shop in a place where my grandchildren might encounter someone with a gun."

It might come as a shock to consider the fact that those children probably very often encounter law abiding citizens who are concealing firearms on their person legally. As such, does that make these folks likely to harm Ms. Nador's grandchildren? I think not.

Perhaps at some point a law-abiding citizen will make a mistake with a firearm and that will be big news. But it is more likely that one of those citizens will, at some point, save the life of one of our children or grandchildren - maybe even Ms. Nador's.

Consider this ... If I am shopping at Sunset Foods and a terrorist or "nut case" opens fire on the good people in Aisle 6, it is my hope that a citizen in Aisle 5 with a legally concealed firearm has the opportunity to stop the carnage rather than cower under the cornflakes while his or her firearm sits in the glove box of the car in the parking lot.

Remember, it's the bad guys that do bad things. Sunset owners should also consider the fact that these signs keep some shoppers away, and they don't make themselves known by protesting. They just shop elsewhere.
