Ex-El Diario editor nominated as New York secretary of state

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The former longtime editor of the Spanish-language newspaper El Diario has been tapped to be New York's secretary of state.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his nomination of Rossana Rosado on Wednesday. Once confirmed by the state Senate, she will replace Cesar Perales in the appointed position, which oversees various state regulatory and legal functions.

Rosado worked as a reporter, producer and public affairs professional before joining El Diario, which is the nation's oldest Spanish-language newspaper. She left the publication in 2013 after nearly 20 years.

She is a former board member of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and has led a state council on inmate re-entry.

Cuomo calls Rosado a "respected, intelligent leader" who will be a "force for positive and lasting change."
