Bulls lose to Jazz in OT

Derrick Rose has been vocal at times about not getting foul calls when he drives to the rim. Early in Monday's game at Utah, Rose blew up.

Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg probably was happy to see Rose show some fire. A couple of hours later, Rose knocked down a go-ahead 3-pointer to put the Bulls up by 3 with 18.5 seconds left.

But the Bulls couldn't corral a missed free throw, let the Jazz tie it up, and then fell flat in overtime, losing 105-96 in Salt Lake City. The Bulls are 1-2 on their seven-game road trip.

Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 26 points but seemed to get worn down and missed shots in overtime. The Bulls lost badly to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, then had to play at high altitude Monday.

Pau Gasol finished with 19 points and Rose scored 14. Utah forward Gordon Hayward turned it on late. He scored the tying basket on a driving lay-in with 4.8 seconds left in regulation and added 8 points in overtime.

Hoiberg's postgame news conference lasted just more than a minute.

“Obviously a very tough way to lose that one,” Hoiberg told reporters after the loss. “I felt like we gave it away. We had our chances there. They made the necessary plays to win.”

After Rose's 3-pointer, Hayward was fouled by Butler. Hayward hit the first free throw and missed the second. Taj Gibson had his hands on the rebound, but Utah's Derrick Favors poked it away from behind and Chris Johnson out-hustled the Bulls' guards to chase down the loose ball in the corner.

The offensive rebound set up Hayward's tying drive. The Bulls had 4.8 seconds to try to win the game, but Rose's inbounds pass to Butler was knocked away by Hayward and after a video review, officials gave the ball to the Jazz.

Hayward missed a running jumper, and Favor's putback attempt was blocked by Gasol as time expired.

Rose was fired up in the first quarter. The Bulls' point guard drove to the basket with Jazz point guard Raul Neto bumping him the whole way.

Rose went up for the shot, Favors reached over to get a piece of the ball, and when Rose tumbled to the floor, no foul was called.

Rose slowly climbed back to his feet and voiced his displeasure, earning a technical foul at the 8:49 mark of the first quarter. Gibson and assistant coach Jim Boylen nudged Rose back to the bench so he wouldn't risk getting ejected.

In the second quarter, the Bulls showed some fight. Utah went on a 14-0 run and took a 9-point lead. The Bulls came right back with an 18-2 run and led 51-47 at halftime.

The second half was close throughout. Trailing by 3 points midway through the fourth, Butler tied the score on a fallaway corner 3-pointer.

Over the next several minutes, the Bulls took the lead five times, only to watch Utah tie it up every time. They got a break, though, when Jazz center Rudy Gobert missed a pair of free throws with the score tied and with 28.6 seconds left set up Rose's 3-pointer off a pass from Butler.

• The Bulls officially assigned Mike Dunleavy to the D-League on Monday. The plan is for Dunleavy to practice with the Santa Clara Warriors this week but not play in games.

Dunleavy has yet to play this season while recovering from back surgery. There's a chance Dunleavy could return to game action for the Bulls before the road trip ends next Monday in Charlotte.
