26 suburban cheer squads heading to state

Twenty-six competitive cheerleading squads from the Northwest and West suburbs are advancing to the Illinois High School Association State Series in various categories after competing at one of five sectional sites on Saturday.

Here's a breakdown of which schools are headed to state from suburban sectional competitions held in Lake Zurich, DeKalb and Joliet. The state series, which includes preliminary and final rounds, is scheduled for Feb. 5 and 6 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

Lake Zurich sectional

From the Large Team 2 category, Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Rolling Meadows High School, Schaumburg High School and Fremd High School in Palatine are advancing.

From the Large Team 1 category, Lake Zurich High School, Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein and McHenry High School made it.

And teams advancing in the Medium Team category include Wauconda High School, Grayslake Central High School, Antioch High School, Grayslake North High School and Montini Catholic High School in Lombard.

DeKalb sectional

From the Small Team category, IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst is advancing.

From the Large Team category, Huntley High School, Wheaton North High School, South Elgin High School and St. Charles East High School qualified.

And teams advancing in the Coed Team category include Metea Valley High School in Aurora, Bolingbrook High School and Streamwood High School.

Joliet sectional

From the Large Team category, Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville is advancing.

From the Coed Team category, Hinsdale South High School in Darien is advancing.

And in the Small Team category, Timothy Christian High School in Elmhurst qualified.
