A special night for Fremd's seniors

Senior night was a special one for Fremd's girls basketball team on Tuesday night.

That's because coach Dave Yates honored a class which has already been a part of three straight Mid-Suburban League championships, along with a second-place finish in last year's Class 4A state tournament.

The Vikings' seniors celebrated their night in style, enjoying a 73-30 triumph over visiting Hoffman Estates for their 20th win against only 2 losses.

The Vikings improved to 7-0 in the West and will host Barrington (10-11, 5-2) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Fremd seniors Lauren Glaser and Jenna Simios (5 points) each made the first starts of their varsity career and helped Fremd jump out to a 13-3 lead.

Also honored before the game were Bryana Hopkins (15 points), Brianna Lewis (12), Erin Lenahan (8), Amanda McCartney (8), Julia Wacker (7) and manager Eric Ruzanski.

"Tonight was about our seniors," Yates said. "This group has accomplished so much already in their time at Fremd. I don't think I could ask for much more from this group. They are a very close group and are tremendous role models.

"Their work ethic and drive have set the bar at an amazing level for our program. We still have a lot to accomplish this year, but I think a can take a moment and say that this group has been amazing."

Hoffman (9-14, 1-6) was led by junior Monraia Wilson's 10 points and 6 from Tayler Williams.

Buffalo Grove 85, Elk Grove 43: Sammy Stejskal (17 points), Georgette Topalis (16), Natali Dimitrova (12) and Maddie Welter (11) led host and MSL East leader Buffalo Grove to its 19th win in 23 games and a 7-0 record in the MSL East.

The Bison, who scored a season-high 85 points, connected for nine 3-pointers. Three were from Topalis, two apiece from Welter and Stejskal and one apiece from Amanda Kowalski and Megan Gamber.

Top scorer for EG (3-18, 1-6) was senior forward Sarah Pauscher (14).

Schaumburg 49 Palatine 36: Visiting Schaumburg raised its record to 14-8 and 5-2 in the MSL West as juniors Mallory Gerber (15 points), Laura O'Connell (11) and Gina D'Orazio (9) led the way,

Palatine (9-13, 1-6) was led by Carrissa Multon (12 points) and 6 apiece from Corey Rinella and Ashley Shapiro.

Rolling Meadows 57, Prospect 33: Krya Spiwak (15 points) and Morgan Campagna (9 rebounds) both scored 15 points and Katherine Nolan added 12 with 9 rebounds as the host Mustangs raised their record to 16-7 and 5-2 in the MSL East.

"We had good balance on the offensive end," said RM coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "I thought Hannah Mickey anchored our defense."

The Mustangs had six 3-pointers, including two from Megan King and Campagna and one each from Kelsey Nallon and Nolan.

Prospect (7-16, 1-6) was led by Clare O'Carroll (9 points). Nikki Matters, Angelina Villasin and Margherite Pettenuzzo each had 6.

"Rolling Meadows is coached well and they are a team looking to transition as fast as they can off any type of made or missed shot," said Knights coach Gabrielle Lovin.

"We stuck with them (21-17 in second quarter) until they had a 13-0 run to finish the half. We were more intense and played like a team. I am proud of how we never gave up."

Hersey 56, Wheeling 43: Claire Gritt (19 points), Kelly Weyhrich (13) and Maggie Berigan (10) and Erin McGrath (8) led visiting Hersey (18-4, 5-2) to the MSL East win.

The Wildcats (11-12, 2-5) were paced by junior Melissa Claver, who scored a game-high 28 points including two 3-pointer in the second half.
