18 families displaced after fire in Schaumburg

Eighteen families were displaced yesterday after electrical meters caught fire and power was shut off at a Schaumburg condominium building, officials said. The building on John Rolfe Drive is owned by Fellowship Housing, a nonprofit that offers services for single mothers and their children who are at risk of homelessness, Associate Director Pam Orr said. The fire was contained to a communal utility room for six units, but the power had to be shut down. Full story.

Cook sheriff blasts Rauner over mental health cuts

Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart and the National Alliance on Mental Illness denounced Gov. Bruce Rauner this weekend, following the announcement that Lutheran Social Services of Illinois would lay off 750 employees and shut down 30 social services programs because of the state's budget impasse. "Lutheran provides essential services to the very people government is supposed to care for in times of distress," Dart said Sunday. "For the governor to allow these programs to wither away is simply deplorable." Full story.

Aurora police hope video sheds light on fatal shooting

Aurora police continue searching for suspects in the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old man and the stabbing of a 22-year-old Batavia man, which occurred within moments of each other outside a downtown restaurant early Saturday morning. "We're continuing to ask anyone who has any information to come forward," said Dan Ferrelli, media relations manager with the Aurora Police Department. Broncos, Panthers to face off in Super Bowl

In the AFC title game, Denver cornerback Bradley Roby picked off Tom Brady's pass on a 2-point try with 12 seconds left to preserve a 20-18 victory for the Broncos over the New England Patriots yesterday afternoon. In last night's NFC Championship Game, Cam Newton threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others, and Carolina's big-play defense stifled Arizona's top-ranked offense in a 49-15 romp. Denver (14-4) and Carolina (17-1) will battle for the title on Feb. 7.

Blackhawks shut down Blues 2-0

The Chicago Blackhawks snapped a goal-scoring drought of more than 154 minutes and beat division rival St. Louis 2-0 on goals by Artemi Panarin and Andrew Shaw last night at the United Center.
