Glenbard South controls game from start

Fenton rolled out all the stops against Glenbard South on Friday night.

The Raiders, however, refused to be stopped.

Glenbard South controlled the Metro Suburban Conference West Division girls basketball game from start to finish, taking an easy 48-20 victory in Glen Ellyn after scoring the game's first 9 points.

Fenton coach Tim Anderson said the plan was to slow Raiders sophomore guard Mady Carli, who had a big day against the Bison when the teams met in December. Carli only scored 2 points — she contributed in other ways with 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 blocked shots — but the Raiders found more than enough scoring elsewhere.

Sophomore guard Sarah Cohen led Glenbard South with 13 points, sophomore forward Ashley Dodge scored 11 and freshman center Maggie Bair added 10 points. Bair also had 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

“Carli, she lit us up last time at our place, and we tried to take her out of it a little bit,” Anderson said, “but (Cohen) stepped up, to her credit. That's what good players do. That's what I keep telling our kids. That's what good players do. They adjust, they adapt and they step up.”

The Raiders (11-8, 5-2) dropped in four 3-pointers, but they also got to the rim frequently.

“That's something we've been working on a ton in practice is being aggressive and going to the rim,” Raiders coach Morgan Kasperek said. “To start the game they really did a nice job. Ashley Dodge has changed her tone. She's taking the ball to the rack, Maggie Bair is taking the ball to the rack. When they learn how to do those things, hopefully it opens everything else up. It gets Sarah and Mady shots. Sarah's shot is on right now and she's shooting really well, and so is Mady. So it's nice to try and get everything in the flow.”

The Raiders' defense also made an impression on Fenton (3-18, 0-7).

“We struggled to put the ball in the basket. Their defense was really stifling for us,” Anderson said. “Credit goes to them. Their defense, they made it very difficult for us.”

Freshman guard Ashley Lira came off the bench to lead the Bison with 9 points. Courtney Susmarski added 8.

“They were defensively all over them,” Kasperek added about her players. “We were concentrating on cutting off the reversal, so that really hurt their offense.” 9
