Indiana volunteers donating bottled water to Flint residents
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Indiana residents are collecting bottles of water for Flint, Michigan, where high levels of lead have been found in the city's water.
In South Bend, volunteers are organizing a bottled water drive for Saturday. Organizer Donald Smith says his 3-year-old son was diagnosed with lead poisoning because of lead-based paint.
Volunteers say they'll be getting donations from Indianapolis, Elkhart and Fort Wayne. They plan to drive them Sunday to Michigan.
Another Fort Wayne group plans a "Fill it Up 4 Flint, Michigan" event. And city leaders have partnered with a grocery store and collected at least 27,000 bottles of water. They plan a Flint delivery on Feb. 1.
Help also is coming from another Michigan neighbor: Canada. Fans of the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires and Sarnia Sting have donated thousands of bottles and the teams are delivering 35 pallets of water on Saturday.
