Rolling Meadows woman dead after train hits SUV in Arlington Heights

A Rolling Meadows woman was killed yesterday when an inbound Metra train hit her SUV in Arlington Heights, causing the vehicle to burst into flames, police say. The collision occurred about 2:30 p.m. along the Union Pacific Northwest Line near Northwest Highway and Euclid Avenue, and police suspect the driver went around the lowered gate. Full story.

Elgin woman gets 13 years for 5th, 6th DUIs

A homeless Elgin woman was sentenced to prison for her fifth and sixth DUIs, Kane County officials said. Cheri L. Bookman, 48, agreed yesterday to a sentence of 13 years in exchange for pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated DUI, according to a statement from the Kane County state's attorney's office. Fire leaves St. Charles home uninhabitable

A fire yesterday afternoon in St. Charles did about $100,000 damage to a home and left it uninhabitable, fire officials said. A resident of the home on the 400 block of 14th Street returned from running an errand just after 3 p.m. and discovered a fire. Full story.

Protesters say supermarket should prohibit concealed firearms

A family-owned suburban supermarket chain drew protesters at its downtown Highland Park location for not posting signs prohibiting concealed firearms in the stores. Roughly 20 protesters tried to make their point yesterday on the public sidewalk at the Green Bay Road entrance to Sunset Foods. Full story.
