Body pulled from ruins of house fire in central Illinois

LATHAM, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in central Illinois are trying to identify a body found in the ruins of a house fire near the small village of Latham (LAY'-thuhm) in Logan County.

The (Decatur) Herald and Review reports (http://bit.ly/1lnlEwE ) that the body was pulled from a bedroom after a house fire early Sunday. Latham Fire Protection District Chief Kenny Crosier says "fire was coming out of everywhere" when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The newspaper reports that the body was so badly burned that officials couldn't immediately determine a gender or age.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters battled the blaze in frigid conditions. Crosier says the trucks and hoses kept freezing in the 8-degree temperatures.

Latham is about 20 miles northwest of Decatur.
