Wauconda woman killed in head-on crash in Hawthorn Woods

A 60-year-old Wauconda woman was killed Tuesday night after being involved in a head-on collision in Hawthorn Woods.

Police on patrol about 9:52 p.m. came upon the crash on Old McHenry Road, just east of Redwood Lane. The initial investigation shows a 19-year-old Crystal Lake man driving a 2002 Honda CRV west on Old McHenry Road, may have fallen asleep and crossed the centerline and struck a 2008 Mazda 3 head on, according to police.

Police said the driver of the Mazda, Ewa Lang of Wauconda, was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in either vehicle and no witnesses to the crash, Hawthorn Woods police said.

The driver of the Honda was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by Lake Zurich Fire Department with nonlife threatening injuries.

Police Chief Jennifer Paulus said that driver's name is not being released at this point as he has not yet been charged with anything. Possible charges will be reviewed once the investigation is complete, she added.

No intoxication is suspected for either driver, but toxicology results are pending, according to Hawthorn Woods police.

The crash is being investigated by the Hawthorn Woods Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team. The South Lake County Regional Community Emergency Response Team was activated to assist with traffic and scene lighting. The crash resulted in Old McHenry Road being closed for approximately five hours.
