Drivers injured in Winchester Road crashes

Two people, including a Lake County sheriff's deputy, were injured Monday morning in two separate serious crashes on Winchester Road in Lake County.

The first crash happened about 9 a.m. at the intersection of Route 83 and Winchester and involved a car and a semi, Grayslake Fire Batallion Chief Mike Rutkowski said.

The driver of the car, a woman, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition, Rutkowski said. An update on her condition was unavailable Monday night. The driver of the semi was uninjured.

While emergency workers responded to that crash, police closed Winchester Road and were directing traffic just east of Route 83 at Midlothian Road.

A Lake County sheriff's deputy driving an unmarked SUV was driving west on Winchester and made a left turn to go south on Midlothian when he was broadsided by a pickup truck traveling north on Midlothian about 10:45 a.m., said Christopher Covelli, the Lake County sheriff's public information officer.

"We're still trying to determine what exactly happened at the intersection," Covelli said "Our deputy was driving an SUV, and it sustained significant damage."

The deputy suffered a concussion and other injuries and was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was treated and later released. The other driver was not injured, he said.

No tickets have been issued in that crash, and it remains under investigation. Roads in the area remained closed for more than four hours.
