Showcase sequel at Fremd promises to be a thriller

Part two of the Vikings second annual Chicagoland Invitational Showcase takes place Saturday, with ten varsity girls basketball contests scheduled.

Part one of the showcase was held on Dec. 5 when 19 varsity games were play in the main and South gyms. On that day, Fremd defeated Incarnate Word (Mo.) 59-47 while Hersey was a 59-21 winner over St. Charles North.

Today's area hopefuls once again include Fremd, ranked No. 2 in the Class 4A poll, and Hersey, ranked No. 9.

Hersey coach Mary Fendley will send her Huskies (14-3) against No. 3 state-ranked New Trier (15-3) at 1 p.m. while coach Dave Yates Vikings' (14-1) will take on Morgan Park (Chicago) at 2:30 p.m.

Both games will be played in the main gym.

The other games in the main gym are Marshall vs Rufus King (Milwaukee, Wi.) at 10 a.m., Whitney Young vs. Gary Westside (Ind.) at 11:30 p.m., Benet vs. Heritage Christian (Ind.) at 4 p.m., Montini vs. Davenport North (Iowa) at 5:30 p.m., Bogan vs. Trinity at 7 p.m. and Joliet Catholic vs. Rockford Lutheran at 8:30 p.m.

In the south gym, varsity games will be Geneva vs. Heritage Christian (Ind.) at 11:15 a.m. and Downers Grove North vs. Marian Catholic at 12:45 p.m.

Besides Fremd and Hersey, other state-ranked Class 4A teams in the event are No. 1 Montini, No. 4 Whitney Young, No. 5 Benet and No. 8 Trinity.
