Davis helps No. 6 Baylor women rout Kansas 58-40

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - A near-perfect third quarter from the field by Baylor turned a tight game into a rout.

The sixth-ranked Lady Bears hit their first eight shots in the period en route to a 58-40 win over Kansas on Wednesday night.

Baylor made nine of its 12 shots in the quarter to turn an eight-point game into a 21-point advantage.

Nina Davis scored 16 points and Niya Johnson and Alexis Jones had 12 points apiece for the Lady Bears.

"We just tried to jump out with intensity and just try to get them on their heels," Johnson said.

Baylor held Kansas' leading scorer and starting point guard, Lauren Aldridge, scoreless. She had only been shut out three times over her two-year career as a Jayhawk. Coming into the game, Aldridge averaged 12.2 points per game on the season.

"I think she got some good looks," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "She just missed them. She is a leader for Kansas. I know every time we've played against her, she's hit some big shots for them."

The Lady Bears (12-1, 2-1 Big 12) trailed early on before using an 8-0 run to help them build an eight-point lead after the first quarter and still were up eight at the half.

Chayla Cheadle scored 12 points to lead Kansas (5-9, 0-3), which was hoping for a repeat of its upset of the Lady Bears from two years ago.

"I felt like since we started conference play, my confidence has been lifted," Cheadle said of her second double-digit effort of the season.
