Suburban gun dealers not worried about Obama's plan
In light of President Obama's executive order narrowing a loophole that exempts gun buyers from background checks if the seller isn't a federal registered dealer, several licensed gun dealers in the suburbs say that will make little difference to their day-to-day operations. "We do the strictest background check already," said John Handley, manager of 5 Star Firearms in Zion, who added that the changes would affect private sellers more than dealers like himself. Wheaton College moving to fire professor who supported Muslims
Wheaton College is taking steps to fire suspended political science professor Larycia Hawkins, who drew criticism late last year for saying Christians and Muslims worship the same God. The evangelical Christian school's provost, Stanton Jones, delivered a notice Monday to Hawkins and the college's president that recommended the initiation of Hawkins' "termination-for-cause" proceedings. Advocate, NorthShore vow to pursue merger
Leaders of Advocate Health Care and NorthShore University HealthSystem say they are still committed to a merger that would create the largest health care system in Illinois, despite the Federal Trade Commission's attempts to block it. In a meeting with the Daily Herald Editorial Board Tuesday, Advocate and NorthShore leaders disagreed with the FTC's position that the proposed merger would bring "significant harm to consumers with rising health care costs and diminished incentives to upgrade services and improve quality." Sheriff's office says Elgin evictee made bomb threat
Authorities say an Elgin man made a bomb threat Tuesday as they were trying to evict him from a house. Pitor Dutkiewicz, 51, is charged with disorderly conduct and threatening a public official. Full story.
