Rolling Meadows finishes strong at Montini

Rolling Meadows' girls basketball team made 8 of 12 free throws in the final quarter on Wednesday to put away a 49-46 victory over Oak Park-River Forest in the consolation third-place game of the Montini Christmas Tournament in Lombard,

The Mustangs went 2-2 in the prestigious 16-team event and now stand at 11-5 heading into the 2016 portion of their schedule.

“I was proud of our players' resiliency today, coming back from a three-overtime loss (78-72 to Geneva on Tuesday),” said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. “This tournament was a great experience for our team, showing us a variety of styles played at a high level.”

Junior guard Kyra Spiwak led the Mustangs with a game-high 19 points. She and Melissa Spiwak were each 4-of-5 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter while Katherine Nolan (13 points) and Morgan Campagna (8 points) each had one apiece.

Kelsey Nallon and Megan King each had a 3-pointer for the Mustangs, who trailed 25-21 at half.

Paul VI Catholic 60, Fremd 42: In a battle of unbeatens in the Naples Holiday Tournament in Florida, nationally-ranked Paul VI of Fairfax, Va. (12-0) went on an 8-0 run to close out the third quarter for a 39-26 cushion over the Vikings (13-1).

Kate Klimkiewicz, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, led the Panthers with 18 points. Senior Bryana Hopkins also scored 18 points for Fremd followed by Brianna Lewis (11).

Barrington 66, Fenwick 51: The Fillies notched their first win at the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic as senior guard Kelly Katis scored a game-high 24 points with three 3-pointers, 6 assists and 1 steal.

All-tourney selection Megan Talbot added 15 points with 5 rebounds and 2 steals while Auri Grayson also reached double figures (10 points, 4 assists). Teammate Alex Van Ryne had 6 points and 6 rebounds while Abigail Elo handed out 2 assists with a steal and she hit a 3-pointer.

Talbot and Claire Collier also had 3-pointers for Barrington.

Bartlett 67, Prospect 52: Kaitlin Brohan had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists and Nicole Gerdevich added 15 points to lead Bartlett (9-6) to a win at Dundee-Crown.

The Knights (7-10) were led by all-tourney selection Margherite Pettenuzzo's career-high 17 points, including two 3-pointers. The sophomore guard also had 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Classmate Emily Frasco (4 rebounds) added 12 points (two 3-pointers).

Olivia Sykes and Kendra Gancarz (4 rebounds) each had one 3-pointer for Prospect. Nikki Matters had 3 rebounds.
