Rantoul man found insane in I-57 car-ramming incident

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois man has been acquitted by reason of insanity of aggravated battery after allegedly ramming a car on Interstate 57.

Champaign County Judge Harry Clem determined during a bench trial Tuesday that 54-year-old Brian McStay of Rantoul could not understand the criminality of his actions.

Illinois State Police say McStay's truck rammed the back of a car carrying three women last Jan. 13, knocking it into a ditch. Police say the truck then rammed the car a second time, throwing one of the women who had exited the car onto snow-covered ground. She wasn't seriously injured.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1PxsX19 ) McStay was found about a mile away, slumped over the steering wheel.

Clem ordered McStay to remain in the custody of the Department of Human Services.
