Schaumburg tops Lyons for third place at Wheaton North

Schaumburg's girls basketball team showed its versatility at the free throw line on Saturday to pull out a 44-43 overtime victory over Lyons Township in the third-place game of the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North High School.

In the extra session, the Saxons outscored Lyons 5-4 with all their points coming at the free throw line from four different players.

Saxons senior Lexi Ross converted two while Laura O'Connell, Mallory Gerber and Maya Bowens each had one to give the Saxons the dramatic win.

Gerber, who had a game-high 16 points along with her 6 rebounds, was named to the all-tourney team.

O'Connell chipped in 12 points with 5 rebounds and 2 assists while Bowens had 7 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Palatine 35, Glenbard North 29: Palatine won the consolation championship at the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic as Elena Porrata led a balanced offense with 7 points, followed by Reggie Much (6), Sydney Rzepka (6) and Brittany Shapiro (5).

Brittany Shapiro and Ashley Shapiro each had 5 rebounds for Palatine (6-10) while Rzepka had 4.

Buffalo Grove 61, Fenwick 38: Senior Maddie Welter recently connected for a school-record eight 3-pointers in one game.

The Buffalo Grove guard, who also became the school's 13th girl to reach 1,000 points in a career, is showing no signs of slowing down from 3-point land.

She connected for five more with a game-high 17 points to help lead Buffalo Grove in the opening-round of the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic.

BG (9-2) will face Maine West (10-4) in Monday's 5 p.m. quarterfinal.

Senior Sammy Stejskal added 13 points, followed by Amanda Kowalski (7), Natalie Dimitrova (6) and Georgette Topalis (5). Kowalski and Topalis each had a 3-pointer.

Maine West 44, Naperville Central 41: Led by freshman Rachel Kent's game-high points, Maine West won its first game of the Dundee-Crown tourney to improve to 10-4 overall.

Other top scorers for the Warriors were Monica Liwag (7 points), Eliza Palarz (6) and Allison Pearson (5).

Pearson and Liwag connected for 3-pointers for West which will face Buffalo Grove in Monday's 5 p.m. quarterfinal.

Hoffman Estates 63, Mundelein 60 (OT): Hoffman Estates worked overtime to take 11th place at the Mundelein Christmas Tournament as all-tourney selection junior Monraia Wilson produced her career-high of 30 points, converting 11 field goals, four from 3-point range.

Erin Hanson (12 points). Kate Mongold (8) and Jennifer Nailor (6) were the next highest scorers for the Hawks (7-8).

Elk Grove 50, Elgin 47: Sarah Pauscher (14 points), Bailey Smola (8), Jenny Banak (7), Abbey Sloan (6), Alex Masnica (6) and Leilani Rivera (6) led the Grenadiers (3-12) in their final game of the Wheaton North tournament.

Masnica had a pair of 3-pointers while Banak and Taylor Matos each had one.

Resurrection 48, Barrington 41: Claire Collier (14 points, 4 rebounds), Megan Talbot (11 points, 7 rebounds) and Auri Grayson (7 points, 3 assists, 2 steals) were top scorers for the Fillies in their first-round game at the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic.

Teammate Abigail Elo had 5 assists for the Fillies, who meet Burlington Central on Monday at 12:30 p.m.

Larkin 55, Wheeling 52: Melissa Claver (19 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals), Michaela Vasey (12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) and Shannon Kennedy (11 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds) were top scorers for Wheeling (5-10) in its final game of the Mundelein tournament.

Marist 62, Rolling Meadows 47: Rolling Meadows (9-4) dropped its first game at the Montini Christmas tourney and will face Romeoville on Monday at 1:15 p.m.

The Mustangs trailed 20-14 after one quarter and fell behind by 20 in third quarter but made a nice rally to get back to within 11 points with 3:50 to go in the game.
