Lake County sheriff warns of ruse burglaries

Southern Lake County has seen an increase in ruse burglaries over the past two months, the Lake County sheriff's office said Saturday in an alert.

In a ruse burglary, the homeowner is lured outside distracted by one individual, while another individual enters the home, typically targeting items such as cash and jewelry. Suspects will use many excuses to lure homeowners outside, including claims of being subcontracted by local government, ploys of a broken pipe and offers of landscaping services.

There are also instances when offenders will remain inside with homeowners, distracting them while other individuals enter the home. Senior citizens are frequently the intended target.

“Being vigilant and reporting anything out of the ordinary is the first line of defense against these criminals,” Sheriff Mark Curran said in the news release.

Deputies would rather respond to a false alarm than miss an opportunity to apprehend criminals, Undersheriff Ray Rose said. “If you see a person or car in the area you don't recognize, safely take note of the vehicle description, license plate, and call 911.”

Police also said residents should take these steps:

• Never allow anyone inside your home without a pre-scheduled appointment.

• If an individual claims affiliation with your local government, ask for identification and call the government office to verify it.

• Do not leave your home with an unscheduled visitor.

• Keep a watch on elderly neighbors and family members, reminding them of precautions they should take.

• Immediately report suspicious activity by calling 911.
