Castro has career day for Harvest; Streamwood wins 1st

Paulina Castro had a career day and the Harvest Christian girls basketball team notched a big win in the third-place game of the Blenner Holiday Classic at St. Viator.

Castro, a senior who will play at Northern Illinois next year, scored a career-high 32 points as the Lions (11-5) beat Class 4A Glenbrook North.

Sophomore Alyssa Iverson, who joined Castro on the all-tournament team, added 16 points and Rachel Oostdyk had 8 for Harvest, which now has 7 wins this season against Class 4A schools.

"I couldn't be prouder of the girls," said Lions coach Rich DeTamble, whose team reached the Class 1A Elite Eight last year. "Our kids refuse to quit. Playing all these bigger schools is giving me an ulcer but we're getting tougher."

Streamwood 51, Niles West 42: Jenejah Williams struck for 25 points, 18 rebounds and 4 blocks to lead the Sabres (1-12) to their first win of the season at the Mundelein tournament. Maddie Exline and Amyna Lewis added 9 points each for Streamwood.

"We're playing better each game," said Sabres coach George Rosner. "We were finally hitting from the outside, leaving Williams open for a big game."

Cary-Grove 51, Hoffman Estates 42: Katie Sowa hit for 18 points, Maddie Görz had 11 points and 8 rebounds and Olivia Miller scored 9 points to lead Cary-Grove (3-12) to its second straight win at the Mundelein tournament.

Glenbard North 42, Jacobs 34: Talia Surges had 13 points and Nicole Durben added 8 for Jacobs (4-9) at the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North.

Waubonsie Valley 44, Elgin 34: Also at Wheaton North, Alisha Panthier had 12 points and Tianna Stewart added 8 for Elgin (1-12).

Palatine 42, West Aurora 23: Carley Frauenhoff (8 points) and Ashley Williams (7) led West Aurora (7-5) in this loss at Wheaton North.

South Elgin 50, Niles North 44: Mackie Kelleher's 19 points led the Storm (7-4) to a win on the first day of the Riverside-Brookfield tournament.

Ridgewood 47, Westminster Christian 29: Maddie Versluys had 15 points and 9 rebounds and Hannah Haecker added 6 points for Westminster (6-9) at the Guerin tournament, Lily Harbaugh had 7 rebounds for the Warriors.
