Jury convicts daycare operator of involuntary manslaughter

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A jury has convicted a Springfield daycare operator of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2011 death of an 11-month-old boy in her care.

Sixty-eight-year-old Cammie Kelly was found guilty Wednesday in the death of Kaiden Gullidge of Rochester. She had been charged with first-degree murder.

The State-Journal Register reports (http://bit.ly/1O6TvB2s ) she faces two to five years in prison when she's sentenced.

Kelly, who operated a daycare in her apartment, told investigators Kaiden was sitting on the floor, fell over backward and hit his head. He died two days later.

Medical witnesses for the state testified the boy died from blunt force head trauma. Three medical experts presented by Kelly's lawyer said he died of a thrombotic stroke.

The eight-woman, four man Sangamon County jury deliberated about a day.
