Holiday cookies can make the best gifts

Food often is a cherished part of how we celebrate the holidays. And homemade cookies make for a colorful display at a party or as gifts. No wrapping required.

Some of our fondest memories of holidays involve nibbling on treats made by those we love. Sometimes it's a special recipe made just once a year.

Cookies are portable, too. You can deliver a plate full to neighbors, co-workers or send a box to family across the globe.

And whether they come from recipes handed down for generations or just clipped from today's paper, bakers, at this time of year especially, bring out their best.

Here are some cookie recipes that go beyond the traditional in flavors and textures and, who knows, they might become a part of your own traditions.
