Fiery semi crash closes northern Indiana highway for hours

GARY, Ind. (AP) - Traffic is moving against after a section of Interstate 80/94 in northwestern Indiana was closed for several hours as inspectors checked a bridge for damage from a fiery semitrailer crash.

Indiana State Police say the semi was westbound about 1 a.m. Tuesday when it went off the roadway, hitting a guardrail and concrete pillar. It went airborne and across three lanes before then catching fire underneath the bridge for a Gary city street. Police say the driver was able to escape the truck without injury.

The westbound lanes remained closed for about seven hours while the wreckage was cleaned up and the bridge inspected.

As of about 8:45 a.m. all four lanes were reopened but the right exit lane still was closed.
