One dead, one injured during armed robbery in Aurora

A 79-year-old Plano man was beaten to death in an early Sunday morning robbery of an Aurora night club and police are searching for three suspects.

Police said the men, two of whom wore masks and a third who had his face covered from his nose down, entered the Latin American Club on the 1300 block of Dearborn, on the city's near east side about 5:30 a.m. Sunday and demanded money from two men who were cleaning the building. Almost simultaneously, they attacked the men and beat them until they were unconscious.

Both men were taken to an Aurora hospital but one of the victims, Felipe Garcia, 79, of Plano, died around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

The other victim, a 55-year-old Aurora man, is being treated for nonlife-threatening wounds.

Police said the suspects, at least one of whom was armed with a large, machete-type knife, made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and liquor. The victims and surveillance footage provided little description of the offenders except that they all wore hooded sweatshirts, one black, one blue and one gray.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to any arrests.

An autopsy on Garcia is pending at the DuPage County Coroner's Office in Wheaton.
