Grayslake Central students collect 50,000 pounds of food

Grayslake Central High School students collected more than 50,000 pounds of food during the school's 23rd annual food drive.

Student Council and Public Service Practicum members delivered bags to every home in the community on Nov. 15 and picked up donated items a week later. The students also conducted an all-school food drive which started on Nov. 25.

On Friday, more than 120 students from the two organizations sorted the items for distribution. The Avon Township Food Pantry is the beneficiary of the donation. Local families will be given holiday meals that include a frozen turkey, potatoes, apples, milk, and multiple boxes of non-perishable goods.

"This year's students showed great resolve to this fantastic cause by venturing out into the snowstorm to collect canned food for their community. We are very proud of how committed they are to a cause greater than themselves" Public Service Practicum teacher Dustin Chierico said in a news release.

Community members can still donate by visiting the GCHS Student Council's GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/yeswecan15.
