San Bernardino shooter lived in Chicago, suburbs

The man who slaughtered 14 people in San Bernardino, California, was born in Chicago and might have lived for a short time in Darien.

Sources confirmed Rizwan Syed Farook was born June 14, 1987, at Cook County Hospital in Chicago to Syed Farook and Rafia Shariff Farook, both born in Pakistan, who were living in an apartment on the 1900 block of west Harrison Street in Chicago.

In San Bernardino, he was known as Syed Rizwan Farook, a 28-year-old health department employee who, along with his wife or partner, Tashfeen Malik, 27, gunned down 14 people and seriously wounded more than a dozen others Wednesday before being killed in a shootout with police.

The elder Syed Farook expressed shock at his son's actions in an interview with the New York Daily News. He said his son graduated from La Sierra High School in Riverside, California, in 2003.

Before that, the elder Syed Farook moved his family around the Chicago area before settling in California, records show. A son was born at Elmhurst Hospital in 1985, two years before Syed Rizwan Farook, while the family lived in Melrose Park, DuPage County sources said. He now lives in California.

The family apparently lived in an apartment on Plainfield Road in Darien for a short time in 1990, records show, then at several Chicago locations before moving to Riverside in 2001, when Syed Rizwan Farook would have been 13 or 14.
