Geneva to drop out of drop-off electronics recycling
Geneva will stop accepting drop-off electronics for recycling game, effective Dec. 15, according to a news release from the city
Changes in the program, which was run by Kane County, spurred the mutual decision by the city and county.
Currently old television sets, computer terminals and other items are collected inside a covered container. When it is full, city public works employees call the recycling hauler to pick it up.
But the recycling contractor wanted items to be piled on pallets, and Geneva's employees would have to load the pallets into a semitrailer truck. City officials didn't want employees doing that.
And the recycling contractor has decided to eliminate Geneva altogether, because there is a drop-off point at St. Charles' public works department, according to the release.
In St. Charles, people performing court-ordered community service handle stacking the items and lifting the pallets.
People can still recycle electronics at monthly pickups behind the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk's office at 540 S. Randall Road. The last for this year is from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Collections will resume in April.
The St. Charles public works drop site is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

In October, Batavia aldermen tentatively approved getting out of the program.
