Teatro Leyden presents 'La dama del alba'

La dama del alba, a fantasy-drama written by Spanish playwright Alejandro Casona, debuts in the auditorium at West Leyden High School in mid-December. Written in 1944 and widely enjoyed in Spanish-speaking countries, performances will be staged in both English and Spanish in this Teatro Leyden production. The cast and crew is composed of students from both campuses.

A story based on legend and lore, La dama del alba (The Lady of the Dawn) takes place in a small village in the Spanish Principality of Asturias. The Narces family is still grieving the death of Angelica, a daughter who died years earlier and only three days after her marriage to Martin. One day Death, who is personified in human terms as La Peregrina (the pilgrim), visits the family as a pilgrim travelling the Camino de Santiago. The family welcomes La Peregrina even though there is something unusual and strangely familiar about her. When grandfather realizes who La Peregrina is, the plot takes a turn, and the family learns the truth about Angelica's disappearance. Then they must come to terms with it.

La dama del alba will debut in English on Friday, December 11 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, December 12 at 3 p.m. The Spanish rendition will be on Saturday, December 12 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, December 13 at 3 p.m. All performance will be in the auditorium at West Leyden High School, 1000 W. Wolf Rd., Northlake.

Admission is $2 for students and $3 for adults. For more information, please visit www.leyden212.org, click on Community and then on Fine Arts.
