Purdue institute publishes gift guide for young engineers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - People shopping for gifts for budding engineers may want to obtain the Engineering Gift Guide from Purdue University's INSPIRE Research Institute for Pre-College Engineering.

Purdue says the guide is filled with more than 50 toy and application suggestions intended to engage girls and boys in engineering thinking and design. It also has 30 books offering stories and facts about engineering for ages 3-18.

Institute Assistant Director Elizabeth Gajdzik says gifts appearing in the guide not only are fun and engaging, they also allow children to learn things like programming, trade-offs, systems thinking and spatial reasoning.

The toys featured in the guide include Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys and more high-tech toys that allow 5- and 6-year-olds to begin thinking about programming.

The gift guide is available online at http://inspire-purdue.org/EngineeringGiftGuide .
