Eden Prairie's Spielman picked as AP football player of year

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eden Prairie running back J.D. Spielman has been selected as the Minnesota Associated Press Player of the Year for high school football.

The award was announced Tuesday. Spielman had more than 1,500 total yards this season with 25 touchdowns as a runner, receiver and returner. Playing cornerback, kick returner and wide receiver, too, Spielman rarely left the field for the Eagles during his senior year.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Spielman has signed to play for Nebraska next season. He's the adopted son of Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman.

Eden Prairie's 40-game winning streak ended in the Class 6A quarterfinals against Totino-Grace.
