Figure skater Brown withdraws from NHK Trophy with injury

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Reigning U.S. champion Jason Brown has withdrawn from the NHK Trophy after straining his back during training.

U.S. Figure Skating announced Saturday that Brown will keep training with restrictions from the medical staff at the Olympic Training Center. Brown's doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

He's scheduled to defend his title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships Jan. 15-24 in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Brown says he'll miss competing at the NHK Trophy, the last of six events in the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series that begins Nov. 27 in Nagano, Japan, but he needs to "get healthy for the rest of the season."

Brown, a 2014 Olympic bronze medalist in the team event, has medaled at all three of his competitions this season.
