Recount sought in tied southern Indiana mayoral election

JASPER, Ind. (AP) - A recount is being sought in the tied election for mayor in the southern Indiana city of Jasper.

Republican Mayor Terry Seitz filed the request Monday for a review of the Nov. 3 election tallies showing him and Democratic challenger Wayne Schuetter both with 1,856 votes. Independent candidate Josh Budd received 190 votes.

The mayor's attorney, David Brooks, tells The (Jasper) Herald (http://bit.ly/1MSZsRm ) that he expects the recount process will show whether any mistakes were made in the vote counting.

State law requires the recount be completed by Dec. 20. If the results remain tied, the City Council would vote by Dec. 31 on whether Seitz or Schuetter becomes mayor of the 15,000-person community.
