Students collect enough food for nearly 548,000 meals

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - Students from 18 high schools in the Quad-Cities area have collected enough food for nearly 548,000 meals.

Officials at a final rally at the River Bend Foodbank in Davenport, Iowa, on Thursday said students participating in the Student Hunger Drive gathered more than 657,000 pounds of food over the past six weeks - about 4,000 more pounds than last year.

This year marks the Student Hunger Drive's 30th anniversary. The food bank's executive director, Michael Miller, says that including this year's total, the drive has collected more than 14.2 million pounds of food in its existence.

The food bank serves 22 counties in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
