Thanks for caring about our veterans
Every year at this time, many American Legion Posts partake in a fund raiser, "Gifts To Yanks That Gave." Legionnaires stand outside of the stores, banks and the train stations. Dressed in appropriate attire, they solicit funds for hospitalized veterans.
All the money collected pays for the jackets, sweat suits and blankets that are distributed on the Wednesday prior to Christmas at Hines Hospital.
Post 1084 of Roselle is known for its 100 percent effort in this worthwhile cause. Beside Hines, they visit many nursing homes where aged veterans live. Post 1084 has received recognition for raising more money than any other post in Illinois in the past 10 years.
I have been collecting such funds for the past 10 years. This past weekend I covered the Jewel in Itasca, both Saturday and Sunday, and on Veterans Day, I covered the Itasca Walgreen's. Customers there were very kind and generous with their time and money. I would like to thank those customers for their kindness.
I also would like to thank the Jewel and Walgreen's organizations for allowing the collections.
