Police standoff ends in Naperville

An eight-hour standoff with Naperville police ended peacefully Thursday evening on the city's south side, where a man had been refusing since late morning to leave a house on the 1900 block of Phaeton Court.

Cmdr. Jason Arres said about 20 officers, including a SWAT team and crisis negotiators, had been attempting to communicate with the man after a family member called police Thursday morning requesting they check on the man's wellbeing.

When he refused to exit, a perimeter was established around the home and immediate neighbors were asked to stay inside.

Tim Rhodes, a Naperville resident who lives just outside the perimeter, said camouflaged officers with large guns had been running through the area since about 11:30 a.m.

"They've got enough armament in here to take over Kabul," Rhodes said.

Police continued to negotiate with the man, who is white and in his late 20s, throughout the day before he came out of the home about 7:30 p.m. Nobody was injured.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The area reopened to the public shortly after, police said.
