Why should taxpayers pay UI buyout?

I read with dismay and disappointment about the decision to fire and buy out the contract of University of Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas for problems that occurred during his tenure.

The University clearly stated that Thomas had done nothing wrong, but that a change was needed. And for this change, they are willing to pay a $2.5 million buyout of his contract, keeping him effectively on the payroll for years to come.

I haven't followed too much about the troublesome coaches that he ostensibly supervised, or the charges against them, but it seems that if he did nothing wrong, the taxpayers of Illinois shouldn't bear the financial brunt of such a buyout.

Tuition at UIUC has more than doubled over the past decade; decisions like this one are part of the reason why.
