Pitcher for women's pro league dies in Pennsylvania at 89

READING, Pa. (AP) - Ruth Hartman, an original member of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1940s and a champion sheep breeder, has died in Pennsylvania. She was 89.

State police in Reading say Hartman hit a deer with her SUV on Saturday, got out to check on the animal and was pinned when her vehicle rolled forward. She was taken to a hospital and died Monday.

Hartman played as Ruth "Rocky" Kramer during the 1946 and 1947 seasons, pitching for the Fort Wayne Daisies, the Grand Rapids Chicks and the Racine Belles for the league featured in the 1992 movie "A League of Their Own."

She later coached softball and taught physical education and health for the Reading School District.

After retiring, she became a sheep farmer.
