Public can now examine Chicago police misconduct allegations

CHICAGO (AP) - The public will now have access to more than 56,000 complaints filed against thousands of Chicago police officers.
The University of Chicago's Civil Rights and Police Accountability Clinic announced Tuesday the launch of the interactive online data base called the Citizens Police Data Project. It includes complaints made against more than 8,500 officers between 2001 and 2008.
The effort is the latest step in an effort to shed light on a department that has long been dogged by a reputation for brutality.
The university says an analysis of the data base reveals that only in a fraction of the cases do complaints against police officers lead to disciplinary action.
