Teachers, not cops should handle discipline

As a career teacher and supervisor of teachers in the field of behavior-challenged students, I am alarmed at the current tendency to hand over minor discipline issues to the police and/or security guards, who are not certified in the training and handling of students in a school environment.

Take the case of the girl who was defiantly using her cellphone in class. The teacher should have dealt with it in a nonviolent way without having to call for outside help.

Perhaps, teachers need more training in classroom management.

Also administrators should be expected to work with teachers and other school personnel in nonviolent methods of discipline.
