Veterans treated to breakfast at Lake Zurich school

Third-graders at Sarah Adams Elementary School in Lake Zurich honored veterans by hosting their 14th annual Veterans Day Breakfast at the school.

About 45 veterans showed up for Thursday's breakfast that featured doughnuts, bagels and coffee. About 30 parent volunteers worked as servers during the morning's festivities.

In preparing for the event, each student interviewed a veteran and focused on the individual's role and what they enjoyed about serving their country.

"I think it's great that the kids get to realize what the military does and that they're their friends," said Army veteran Don Criel of Lake Zurich. "We served our country when it was needed and hopefully we have a military for a long time." The event was started 14 years ago by retired third grade teacher Eleanor Brongiel, who's husband was a veteran.

"She (Brongiel) felt very strongly that after the events of 9/11, many students didn't have an idea of what the military does for our country," said Kathy Perkins, third grade teacher at Sarah Adams Elementary.

The event ended after third grade students performed a medley of patriotic songs for the veterans.
