Mother, son die in southwestern Indiana house fire

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a southwestern Indiana woman and her son have died after a house fire.

Coroners say 30-year-old Connie Stephens of Oakland City died at an Evansville hospital around 3 a.m. Friday, and 10-year-old Alexander Stephens died around 1 a.m. Friday at a Warrick County hospital.

Authorities say a 911 call for help came in late Thursday from the Gibson County home. Oakland City Fire Chief Jim Deffendall says that when firefighters arrived, flames were coming out of the front of the house and the woman, her son and a man were inside.

The man, Douglas Stephens, was taken to a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital for treatment. He was reported in critical condition Friday morning. His relationship to the other two victims was not immediately clear.
