Chile fines salmon company for environmental violations

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - Chile's environmental regulator said Wednesday that it has imposed its biggest fine ever on a salmon-farming company.

The environmental regulator said Los Fiordos was fined $3.2 million for 35 sanitary and environmental violations at 18 salmon farms in the southern Aysen region, which is known for its green valleys and fjords. Los Fiordos is a subsidiary of the food company AgroSuper.

Chile is one of the top global suppliers of salmon and its leading clients include the U.S. But its salmon industry has struggled to recover from a marine virus outbreak in 2007 that caused huge losses by killing millions of salmon.

In 2012, AgroSuper was forced to close a pig-processing plant that enraged residents with its stench, sparking months of protests and even a clash with riot police.
