Girls volleyball: Terrell, Wheeling advance to semifinal
With junior Timber Terrell putting down 12 kills on Monday night, Wheeling's girls volleyball team earned its way into the semifinals of the Class AA Lake Forest regional with a 25-18, 25-19 victory over No. 14 seed Deerfield.
The No. 18 seeded Wildcats will face No. 3 Lake Forest at 6 p.m. today while No. 6 Carmel faces No. 11 Grayslake Central in the second semifinal.
Wheeling sophomore Jessica Janowski handed out 22 assists while also collecting 10 digs and 4 kills. Other attack leaders for the Wildcats (11-25) were Michaela Vasey (4 kills, 17 dogs) and Remy Jankowski (2 kills). Hala Fakhoury collected 17 digs. Vasey and teammate Jazmyn Veloso ecah served a pair of aces.
Maine East d. Elk Grove: No. 14 Maine East topped No. 18 Elk Grove 25-15, 25-23 as the Grenadiers (3-28) were led by on attack by Alex Masnica (4 kills, 7 assists) and Rachel Kandefer (4 kills).
Carly Crothers had 16 digs for the Grens while their top servers were Mary Cronin (11-of-11) and Jenny Banak (10-of-10).
Fremd d. Von Steuben: No. 12 seeded Fremd advanced to the semifinals of the Glenbrook North regional with a 25-3, 25-22 victory over No. 21 Von Steuben (Chicago).
The Vikings will face No. 4 Glenbrook North in today's 5:30 semifinal while No. 5 Prospect meets No. 13 Lake Park.
Niles North d. Conant: No. 17 seed Niles North topped No. 16 Conant to advance to today's semifinal
of the Conant regional and will face top-seeded New Trier at 6 p.m.
No. 8 Rolling Meadows meets No. 9 Niles West in the second semifinal at 7 p.m.
